Marbé Briceno Velázquez’s grounding assortment of aged brass, charcoal boucle and deep red marble tile

In the BOH series What I Love, we’re asking designers to build us a mood board of what’s inspiring them right now.

Marbé Briceno Velázquez takes an architectural approach to interiors. The Los Angeles designer relies on a time-honored blend of neutral tones and natural materials to foster spaces that exude elegance and approachability. “I’m constantly navigating the balance between functionality and beauty,” she tells Business of Home.

Anchored by creamy white travertine and light oak wood, her mood board is grounded in structurally-sound pieces—a nod to the importance of “good bones” and a well-designed layout. “Patterned fabrics bring geometry and rhythm to the scheme, while mustard yellow velvet and Rosso Levanto marble lend richness and tactile depth,” she says.

Whimsical touches, such as a ceramic ant sculpture and a tasseled key chain, add a dash of mystery and intrigue to the design. “Every element was selected for its integrity, history and ability to age gracefully,” she explains. “In a world rushing toward the next new thing, I find calm and clarity in what lasts.”

Here, the Marbé Designs founder breaks down the details, from a fiddle-leaf fig branch to metallic faux leather.
