Showroom Spotlight
Fisher & Paykel has renovated and expanded its flagship experience center in New York, located in the Architects & Designers Building. The Auckland, New Zealand–based appliance brand increased its footprint from 4,600 to 6,400 square feet in a space designed in partnership with local architecture studio Schiller Projects. “While the address remains the same, everything within has been reimagined through our brand ethos of ‘luxury design inspired by nature,’” says Xanthe Whiteley, the senior brand experience designer at Fisher & Paykel. “It is an exploration of kitchen design at the intersection of appliance technology and performance, elemental materials and a deep understanding of the rituals of contemporary living.”

The design is an ode to the surrounding urban landscape of New York. “The entry space [features] flooring tiles that nod to the city’s historic bluestone sidewalks, and a limestone-clad wall [pays] homage to a material used often in New York’s highly recognizable architecture,” says Whiteley. “The sustainably-sourced American oak flooring is reminiscent of the old oak-plank water towers that sit atop surrounding buildings, and the textured ceiling offers subtle references to the city’s iconic grid.” The brand also tapped Stickbulb, a Long Island City–based lighting brand that designed all the pendant lights, to make their mark on the interiors.
The showroom is organized around three central kitchen vignettes—a minimalist kitchen, a contemporary kitchen and a professional kitchen—all of which help guests visualize the range of possibilities the brand’s offerings can produce. The minimalist kitchen, fabricated with millwork by Edgewood Made, pairs dark-stained walnut cabinetry and gray granite countertops with sleek appliances that sit flush with the surfaces and seamlessly blend into the cabinetry. The contemporary kitchen was designed alongside Arclinea and showcases a 16-foot-long island that anchors the oak cabinetry, Fisher & Paykel’s Column refrigeration solutions and new modular cooktops built into the stainless-steel countertop. Lastly, the professional kitchen, designed with Henrybuilt, features walnut millwork, beige marble counters and more durable appliances—a kitchen vignette for avid home cooks and entertainers. “Each environment demonstrates Fisher & Paykel’s unique approach to designing appliances that integrate seamlessly with the architecture of the home and work together as an intelligent ecosystem,” says Whiteley.

Aside from the three main installations, the showroom offers smaller-footprint spaces created in partnership with Space Theory, Henrybuilt’s sister brand that offers a streamlined version of the same system kitchens. These include two compact kitchens that display the brand’s finishes at a smaller scale, ideal for the tighter residences of the Big Apple. There’s also a designated Social Kitchen area, which plays host to events like immersive gatherings and culinary experiences led by in-house chefs who demonstrate what the appliances have to offer in real time. Furniture maker Christian Woo designed the dining table, and bespoke Canadian furniture maker Kastella crafted the chairs and stools within the section. “These events offer a deeper understanding of how a connected kitchen ecosystem supports perfect results—keeping food fresher for longer, storing wine or having it ready to serve, and transforming ingredients into cuisine—all informing a kitchen design tailored to individual patterns of living,” says Whiteley. 150 E. 58th St., Suite 361, New York
